Rating: C

Not to be confused with Infoseek (part of the Go Network), GoTo.com is a different type of search engine. It is based on the principle that those willing to pay more money will have better content. They claim that this increases the relevancy of results, as those that pay more have there pages ranked higher in the results. GoTo also uses another database for results that are not paid. Because of the method of paid listings most of the first results will be either large corporate pages or parts of other large sites. Because of this GoTo is practically worthless for finding obscure information, or doing most types of research.

Pros and Cons:

PROS

CONS

Because GoTo gets money from the paid listings it does not need any banner ads, leading to a very straight forward format. Because of the nature of the paid listings the first few results will almost always be large companies selling something relating to your search.
The results are displayed in a very good, easy to read and understand format. The cost to advertiser is also shown, which is very interesting. You are much more likely to get a no results response then with other search engine, because the size of the normal database used is very small.
Excellent for looking for places to buy something or for doing price comparisons. GoTo offers almost no advanced features, or any features, of any kind.
