Basically, WebRing is a very good group of rings, or sites, banded
together under a single grouping. WebRing, in turn, groups these rings together into
categories, and also allows you to search for them. WebRing is big, but it is still easy
to brows through the rings, as well as to search for the ring that you want. The concept
of a web ring does not lend itself to be corporate sites, so the sites you will find here
are mostly smaller companies as well as individuals sites. This is not very useful if you
are doing research, but it is great for finding general stuff, and fan sties, for your
favorite computer game, sports team, or author. In addition to this beginning your own
ring in any category is not too difficult, and joining a ring can be very easy, depending
on the ring master.
Pros and Cons:
PROS |
CONS |
| Joining a ring can be a good way to get hits for your site,
and can be very good depending on the ring. |
Not very useful when looking for particular information, or
resources on an "academic" subject. |
| Great for finding sites that are made around a specific,
somewhat popular, topic. |
Because the categories are at most two levels deep there
are many rings in each category, making browsing more difficult. |
| In some cases, particularly computers, many pages, often
with very detailed information, can be found on a particular topic. In this case the
WebRing is much more efficient then a search engine. |
WebRing does not offer all the features of most search
engines, as it isn't a search engine. This means you can't use all operators, and other
search options you are used to won't be available. |
