Web Rings

While web rings are not search engines, they have many things in common with category based search engines. A web ring is more a grouping of sites, or a directory, although you can search a web ring. The reason I chose to have web rings be one of my categories of "search engine" is that they are very good for finding sites relating to a specific interests. When you search a web ring, you are not search for content, but rather a category of sites, of which you must pick the ones you feel will have the content you want.

The way a site gets on a web ring, is that it signs up, and then appears in the directory, and in exchange it usually has to put a link to the web ring on the main page. Each web ring is made up of categories, much like those in a category based search engine. Besides the already mentioned difference in the method of searching, a web ring is unlike a search engine in that each category is somewhat independent, with its own creator, name, and set of members.
